The purpose of this 2033 Bible initiative is to make the reading of the Bible integral to preparing the world for the 2033 bimillennial of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
|
Scholars point to the year AD 2033 as the 2000th anniversary of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth and the establishment of the first Christian community in Jerusalem. This community became known in Greek as the “ἐκκλεσία – ecclesia” – the called-out ones, the assembly or church.
This "church" spread Jesus' message of love, grace, peace and a new life throughout Judea and Samaria and eventually touched every part of the world. They took with them the Hebrew Scriptures that tell of God's redemptive work and the "good news" of Jesus, the "anointed one" (Christ) in the Gospels. These, along with the letters of the Apostles, were collated into our Bible that guides the faith and practice of all Christian traditions. As we prepare to commemorate the 2000th anniversary of Jesus' ministry, death, and resurrection, we look to the Bible as our light to direct our remembrance and praise of Jesus Christ. 2033 Bible is a collaborative, global effort across traditions to encourage the reading of the Bible as an act of worship, obedience, and unity in preparation for the bimillennial of the resurrection in 2033. |
We will soon commemorate 2000 years from many key events recorded in the Gospels, which historians tell us cover the 4 years from the ministry of John the Baptist (~AD 29) to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus (AD 33). The bimillennial of these events will be celebrated globally through a collective focus on the reading and study of one of the Gospels for each of these 4 years.*

Why?
The crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus is the highest common denominator in Christianity. The bimillennial commemoration of these events provides a unique opportunity to witness to the life-changing power of Jesus Christ and exhibit the “oneness” he asked of his followers in John 17. Scripture is the gift and tool God provided to share with the world the knowledge of Christ and the guidance to be his disciples. Therefore, we seek to optimize the use of this tool for outreach and discipleship, and a demonstration of “oneness,” as we approach the bimillennial. Thus, Bible reading and study programs that encourage outreach, discipleship, and unity will be a priority for the collective support of 2033 focused ministries.
